What is Slope?

Definición rápida

The steepness of a line, calculated as rise over run. Slope = (y₂ - y₁) / (x₂ - x₁).

Explicación completa

Slope is the ratio of vertical change (rise) to horizontal change (run) between two points. Slope = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁). A positive slope means the line goes up to the right; negative means it goes down; zero is horizontal; undefined is vertical. Slope is the same as "gradient" in British English. In construction, slope is critical for drainage (typically 1–2% away from buildings), roof pitch (rise/run), and ramp accessibility (ADA requires slope ≤ 1:12 = 8.33%). In algebra, slope is the m in y = mx + b. In calculus, slope is the derivative — the instantaneous rate of change.
