What is Gross vs. Net Pay?

Definición rápida

Gross = total earnings before deductions. Net = what actually hits your bank account after taxes and withholdings.

Explicación completa

Gross pay is the total amount earned before any deductions. Net pay (also called "take-home") is what remains after taxes (federal, state, local, FICA/Social Security), health insurance premiums, retirement contributions (401k), and other withholdings. The gap between gross and net is typically 25–35% for US employees, higher in countries with strong social programs (Germany ~45%, France ~50%). A $60,000 gross salary might result in $45,000–48,000 net depending on filing status and deductions. Job offers quote GROSS; always calculate net before comparing offers or planning a budget. Many online salary calculators can do this conversion.
